Temporary cell site boosts 3G and 4G LTE capacity for the Verizon Call Zones at the Waste Management Phoenix Open
CHANDLER, AZ — Anticipating a significant increase in wireless activity from thousands of golf fans at the 2012 Waste Management Phoenix Open, Verizon Wireless has activated a temporary mobile cell site called a COW (Cell on Wheels) and boosted capacity at cell sites surrounding the TPC in North Scottsdale.
The increased network capacity enables thousands of fans to surf the Web, send and receive video and picture messages by text or email, place phone calls, and access their favorite social media sites from the six Verizon Call Zones throughout the course. Fans with a Verizon Wireless 4G LTE device will enjoy the fastest 4G network in America.
Verizon Call Zones
The six Verizon Call Zones are the only authorized areas where tournament attendees can make or receive phone calls. The zones will be staffed by Verizon Wireless personnel, have charging stations and several of the zones will feature interactive demos with the latest wireless devices, including the new 4G LTE DROID RAZR™ MAXX™ by Motorola.
“We anticipate a significant surge in wireless activity, particularly this year with the change in the tournament’s policy on allowing cell phone usage. To stay ahead of the demand for service and to provide a great experience for customers in the Verizon Call Zones, we’ve brought in the COW and boosted capacity of our neighboring cell sites,” said Michael Sandoval, Verizon Wireless’ Southwest region executive director, Network.
These measures are part of Verizon Wireless’ continuous effort to increase capacity and enhance the quality of its wireless voice and data network in Arizona and across the country.
Verizon Wireless has invested more than $70 billion across the nation since it was formed to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services. The company’s ongoing network investment in Arizona totals more than $1.1 billion since 2000.
